Here is a photo of the cake I made for Peanut’s birthday party. It is the character Super Why from the show on PBS. The cake is chocolate with a cookies and cream filling. Normally, you can copy the shape of what you would like on the cake with tracing paper and piping gel; then transfer the pattern to the cake. I printed the character outline from the PBS kids website. It did not work out this time at all. I think the top of the cake was too cold (?). I had to draw the character on the cake as the transfer outline did not work well at all. I then outlined the character in black icing and piped in stars for the character’s body, cape, shoes, etc. I also used a Tip #5 for the hair. As usual, the most time consuming process is mixing all the colors for the cake.

Update:
Jen commented on this post and was so kind to send a fabulous link to a great website called CakeCental. To make her awesome Super Why cake, she used a really cool technique called frozen buttercream transfer and you can view the directions here. Her cake turned out awesome! Thanx Jen for the great website and your great ideas for Super Why party decorations!
My son is turning three and I am looking for Super WHY! stuff. Invitations, table items, plates, party favors, cake, etc… do you have any ideas?
Thanks, Kassey
Hi Kassey,
I had no luck finding Super Why favors, etc. for my son’s party. What I did do was go to PBS.org and I made copies of the coloring activities for Super Why and set up a table with crayons and markers for the kids to color at the party. Then I also used one of the coloring pages to make the cake picture on the cake. I just bought primary colors in plates, napkins, and tablecloth to match the Super Why theme as best I could. Maybe head to the dollar store and pick up books for party favors? Good luck and let me know what you come up with ![]()

Hi and Happy Birthday!
I came upon your blog as I am trying to figure out how to throw a SuperWhy party for my about-to-be-5 daughter next weekend. I am going crazy trying to learn how to draw Princess Presto, and that is with a pencil. I am only medium artistically talented, so the thought of then doing this in icing is rather daunting!
I read about your tracing paper method and was trying to figure out what you did. Even though you said it didn’t work, it sounds like you’ve done it successfully in the past. (It also sounds like you have way more experience than I do at this,) but would you possibly consider emailing me and telling me how you did this? I would be really grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond- I have been dealing with a sick cat and my computer needed to be updated.
Here is what you can do to get an image of Princess Pesto on a cake:
1. Find an image of her if you don’t have one (pbs.org has great coloring pages).
2. Take a piece of tracing paper and trace the image of what you want to use.
3. Using Piping gel (Wilton sells it in a small tub @ Michael’s, Jo Ann’s, etc.) in a decorator icing bag and Tip #1 or #2, trace the image on the tracing paper. Make sure to stir the piping gel before putting it in a decorator bag to remove bubbles. You use the tracing paper so you can turn the image over and trace on the preferred side of the image.
4. After you have traced the image using the piping gel, carefully lift the paper and place onto the iced cake. Genhtly trace your finger or the tip of a paintbrush several times over the traced image. Peel paper off of cake and the piping gel should remain on the cake with the image you traced. Once the image is on your cake base, you can now decorate as you would like! I think the star tip is the easiest to decorate with and you can fill a space nicely without a lot of expertise needed.
I hope that these instructions are easy to understand. Feel free to write me back if you have any questions at all. I would love to see a pic of your finished cake! Good luck! It is a lot easier and far less intimidating than you would think I wish your little one a very Happy Birthday!
Take care,
Heidi
I just went thru the Super Why cake struggle, my 5 yr old son had to have that for his party. I discovered a site in my research that talked about a frozen buttercream transfer and let me tell you it turned out great!!!! Go to cakecentral.com for the directions for the transfer, fabulous icing recipe that worked very well and you can see my end result. I just posted my pic under the children’s cakes today. As for decorations I printed off the coloring sheets from the pbs site, colored them in(me not the kids) and then took them to my local copy store (don’t wanna give free plugs) blew them up like 178% on cardstock paper, cut those out and taped them around for instant decorations.
