9/11

09-11-2008

Where were you on 9/11/01? I am curious because I think it is a lot like, if you were around, when JFK was shot or when the Challenger exploded.

I was just outside the Washington D.C. area with Slack when our lives as Americans changed permanently. We were in Herndon, VA for Slack’s work. I was actually planning my trip that morning to the White House and Holocaust Museum. My good friend J, who was there with her hubby and then small son, called me on the hotel phone from her room and gently asked me if I was watching the television. I watched the 2nd plane hit live and later heard the reporter at the Pentagon pause while reporting and say that he just felt an explosion or something hit the building. For hours after we watched the firetrucks with the flags draped on the back of their trucks race to D.C., sirens wailing. Rush hour traffic at 11 a.m.

Where were you? Making breakfast for the kids? Sleeping? Rushing to work?

Shock. Numb. Grief. Disbelief. Hopeless. Helpless. Utter sadness. I think everyone felt that way this day. I hope that the people: wives, parents, children, neighbors who lost someone on 9/11 knows they were not alone that day in their grief and are not alone today.

I remember the fact that we couldn’t reach you guys and then that you couldn’t get home right away was the most terrifying thing I’d ever felt up to that point.
I miss you. Wish you were here.

Yeah I remember that for sure. Phone lines were jammed. I remember your hubby getting thru to me online finally and asking if we were ok. And finally, days after, realizing we would have to go home on a plane afterall…
Some dumbass standing in front of us at the airport just left his suitcase in line and walked away. Scared the crap out of me. We alerted airport security and they just lamented that he should not have left it alone cuz someone might steal it….?!?!!! Totally oblivious that just days ago America was attacked..with hijacked airplanes…from our airports…yeah.
And I remember the woman on the plane wearing a scarf around her head smiling at me when her nervous husband looked away…felt so bad for them too.

I MISS YOU TOO BTW!!! Love you!
