I am a thirtysomething (already?!) stay-at-home mom of Peanut who lives in the Southwest USA. Peanut should have a blog all of his own considering in his short life all that he has experienced.

Baking and decorating cakes is a favorite hobby and something I have been doing for a couple of years now. Baking tools and equipment along with discovering (and sometimes adapting) recipes is something I enjoy as well. I am a huge fan of all kinds of foods.

Not a total coincidence, I love to run! I gotta work off all of those cakes somehow :).

I also recently, within the past year, have found that I love to garden. That is not an easy accomplishment living in the desert or as I fondly refer to it “living in a freakin’ oven”. I like to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers. I will share my version of a potager.

I have been a pseudo-vegetarian for years. Within the last couple of months, I have become a full-fledged vegetarian. Let me just say the easy part in this lifestyle change is what to eat and what to avoid. Figuring the rest of it out is a different story!

Hi and Happy Birthday!

I came upon your blog as I am trying to figure out how to throw a SuperWhy party for my about-to-be-5 daughter next weekend. I am going crazy trying to learn how to draw Princess Presto, and that is with a pencil. I am only medium artistically talented, so the thought of then doing this in icing is rather daunting!

I read about your tracing paper method and was trying to figure out what you did. Even though you said it didn’t work, it sounds like you’ve done it successfully in the past. (It also sounds like you have way more experience than I do at this,) but would you possibly consider emailing me and telling me how you did this? I would be really grateful.

Thanks in advance,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond- I have been dealing with a sick cat and my computer needed to be updated. :)
Here is what you can do to get an image of Princess Pesto on a cake:
1. Find an image of her if you don’t have one (pbs.org has great coloring pages).
2. Take a piece of tracing paper and trace the image of what you want to use.
3. Using Piping gel (Wilton sells it in a small tub @ Michael’s, Jo Ann’s, etc.) in a decorator icing bag and Tip #1 or #2, trace the image on the tracing paper. Make sure to stir the piping gel before putting it in a decorator bag to remove bubbles. You use the tracing paper so you can turn the image over and trace on the preferred side of the image.
4. After you have traced the image using the piping gel, carefully lift the paper and place onto the iced cake. Genhtly trace your finger or the tip of a paintbrush several times over the traced image. Peel paper off of cake and the piping gel should remain on the cake with the image you traced. Once the image is on your cake base, you can now decorate as you would like! I think the star tip is the easiest to decorate with and you can fill a space nicely without a lot of expertise needed.

I hope that these instructions are easy to understand. Feel free to write me back if you have any questions at all. I would love to see a pic of your finished cake! Good luck! It is a lot easier and far less intimidating than you would think :) I wish your little one a very Happy Birthday!
Take care,
Heidi
